“Paving the Way” Scholarship Fundraiser predicted to set precedent

Seattle, WA- February 2^4th 2010- University of Washington’s Undergraduate Women in Business (UWiB) is busy getting final details in order for its upcoming scholarship fundraiser and silent auction. The Third Annual “Paving the Way” Scholarship Fundraiser on March 2^nd at the UW Club on University of Washington’s Seattle Campus is set to commence at 5:30 PM, with an impressive guest list of corporate sponsors, influential community leaders, and respected UW faculty and staff.

UWiB is awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student member during the Fundraiser on Tuesday. Scholarship and leadership development are the core values of Undergraduate Women in Business, and all profits from the night’s silent auction and dessert dash will support UWiB’s scholarship fund.

Kandace Beck, UWiB’s scholarship recipient from last year, will address the guests, and reflect on how her involvement with UWiB and the scholarship award has shaped her education and future. The fundraiser will also include Martha Fuller as keynote speaker. Fuller, who is EVP, Finance and CFO of Vulcan Inc. is also Undergraduate Women in Business’s “Woman of the Year.”

Undergraduate Women in Business is expanding in both its membership and support. President Felicia Widjaja asserts that “our cause is expanding, and we’re pleased with the growing support—“Paving the Way” fits into our vision of having a scholarship endowment in future, which would ensure the sustainability of our scholarship fund and mission to promote the further advancement of women in business.”

UWiB would like to thank their corporate sponsors; without corporate support the fundraiser and scholarship fund would not exist. The following companies have supported UWiB this year and will be in attendance at the fundraiser: Boeing, Alaska Airlines, Hitachi Consulting, Sparta’s Pizza, Wells Fargo, Vulcan Inc., Accenture, Kris Fellrath, and Peterson Sullivan LLP.

ERC 2/24

Please join us for our last External Relations Committee (ERC) of the quarter this Wednesday the 24^th at 5:30PM in Balmer 212. This is a crucial meeting for members, as it is the last event we have before our annual scholarship fundraiser “Paving the Way” on Tuesday, March 2^nd.

We have many items on the agenda for ERC on Wednesday: First, a presentation from Director Cate Goethals about the Foster School of Business MBA Program and “Women at the Top”. She will speak to us about the challenges women face in the business and corporate world. After Ms. Goethals presentation, we will cover necessary information and plans for the fundraiser, including final plans for members that are volunteering at the event! Finally, we will go over our executive team application, which is now available on the website www.uwuwib.com !

Also, UWiB will be tabling in the Balmer Commons this Tuesday (2/23) and Thursday (2/25) from 12-2PM. You can pay your dues, buy a UWiB t-shirt ($15), pick up an executive team application, and chat with our current exec members! If you don’t already have a T-Shirt, stop buy and pick one up- we will be wearing them around campus on March 2^nd for “UWiB Day” in celebration of our fundraiser!

Businesswomen to Student Networking Event- “A Date with Your Mentor”

UWiB’s quarterly Business Women to Student Networking Event is coming up on February 10^th!This is sure to be a wonderful event- come enjoy an evening spent networking with business mentors and indulge in some delicious Valentine themed goodies.

The quarterly networking event is a favorite of UWiB members- this is a fabulous way to build business contacts, learn more about internship, and career opportunities, and secure a business mentor!

The “Date with Your Mentor” Businesswomen to Student Networking Event is from 5:30-7:00PM in the Balmer Commons on the 10^th. The dress is business casual, and all GOLD members, and those interested in becoming a GOLD member are encouraged to attend!

Nordstrom Internships

For those of you who missed our fabulous Winter Quarter Kick-Off with Laurie Black and Toni Driver, you might be wanting the 411 on Nordstrom Internsips. Toni Driver from Nordstrom gave a brief overview on their prestigious Retail Internship Program- here are the hilites:

the Nordstrom Retail Internship Program selects current junior and senior college students (preference to those in Retail Management, Merchandising Management or Fashion Merchandising)
the program runs from June 15- August 13 2010
Internships are available at both Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations in the greater Seattle area

Here’s what you could expect as an intern at a Nordstrom store:

working in a selling department and reporting directly to a selling manger
at least 80% of your time will be spent selling, learning about products, the selling process and the customer

Here’s what you could expect as an intern at a Nordstrom rack store:

working in a Rack store, reporting directly to the store manager
rotating through all merchandising areas in order to learn all aspects of the Rack business

All interns will:

work with the regional Learning and Development manager to cover a variety of topics
be expected to complete on the job learning projects designed to provide hands on experience in the above topics
gain insight into a variety of career paths at Nordstrom, from buying to store management

As humans, we typically judge people on a day-to-day basis, but judging others for a good cause, now that’s a whole new level of enjoyment. Going with UWiB to Inglemoor High School on January 10^th was one of my favorite volunteer events thus far with the club, considering I got to help out other students prepare for a major event in their near future. Acting as a judge while high school students prepared for their DECA competition (which I believe was only a couple days after we helped them) was a great way to give back to the community, especially since I, along with ten other UWiB members, were able to give advice on how to present not only their materials better, but how to also present themselves in a more professional manner. As a high school student, I was given the chance to participate in DECA, however I never took my school up on that offer further than paying the $10 to join the club and receive a t-shirt. After being at Inglemoor HS I wish with all my heart I would have actually done something with that $10 and challenged myself to put myself in the real-world simulation that DECA provides students with. What a great way to gain practical experience about what’s to come in the future!

Not to mention, the ideas the students came up with for business plans were outstanding! I took many marketing classes while in high school, but I don’t remember being that business-savvy at that age. My co-judge and I represented an “individual” competition, so we only had one student per presentation as opposed to two. The students that presented solo had only 10 minutes from when they received their hypothetical situation to create a new business plan and prepare a speech for us judges, and not to mention they had to know the material so we could ask questions and they would be able to answer efficiently. Between the three students that we heard and the 10 minutes they had to prepare, I was honestly amazed with the quality of their information and their ideas! Hearing feedback from other UWiB members, it sounded like most of the students presenting sounded very professional and knew what they were doing, which is impressive since these were only high school students.

I am really glad that UWiB chose to help prepare these students for their DECA competition, because I believe that it is crucial to challenge yourself and put yourself in real-world situations that will help you become a better businesswoman/man in the future. Gaining experience like this type of competition is hugely beneficial, and I am so happy I was able to help a few students and give them advice that they will carry with them for years to come. Not only that, but it was definitely a fun experience to be on the judging side of competitions—listening and being concentrated the entire time is challenging! I have a lot more respect for real-life judges, company board members, interviewers and anyone who is in this type of situation, because it is hard having to listen to the presenters and take down notes AND remember points from the presentation that were good, or what needed to be improved on. Overall, what a great experience; I hope we can do it again next year!

“Happy Hour” Networking Event Nov. 4th at 5:30 in Balmer Commons

This Wednesday, November 4th we will be hosting a networking event at
5:30 pm in Balmer Commons to kick off our Businesswoman to Student (B2S)
mentorship program. This is a great chance to make connections with
businesswomen in the Seattle community. There will be many businesswomen
in attendance who are excited to meet you, so come take advantage of this
opportunity. This event is themed “Happy Hour,” so please come dressed in
business casual attire. If you have business cards, we recommend you
bring them.

This event is for paid members only. If you would like to attend, but
have not paid your dues yet, please bring them to the event or to a UWiB
tabling event.

It was so nice to see such a great turnout for the information session, the Fall kick-off, the first ERC meeting and our Dress to Impress Workshop. It is always nice to see fresh and enthusiastic faces! Remember to inform your friends about the benefits and opportunities provided by UWiB.
